This wonderful city is the state capital and largest city in Tasmania, an island state, also known as the natural state because almost half of it is in reserves, National Parks and World Heritage sites. In addition, it is Australia’s second oldest city after Sydney and located on the Derwent River, it is a busy seaport as a gateway to the Antarctic.

Closer to town the Penitentiary Chapel gives a look at the in depth history of the penal colony which was the original settlement. This was the chapel for the inmates but it also contains solitary confinement cells beneath the floor which you learn all about on the guided tour. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens overlooking the Derwent River and Tasman Bridge are just a short drive away in your Budget rental car. The Gardens contain historic plant collections and many old, historically significant trees. There is also a restaurant and many paths to walk in order to see all the natural beauty the Gardens have to offer.
