Located on the Yarra River, Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne is very easy to navigate and offers the diversity of different vibes in different neighborhoods, which keeps things entertaining and interesting. There are plenty of museums, galleries, cultural, entertainment and sports attractions, all easy to reach when you go to any of the many Budget Rent a Car locations in and around the city.
There is a Budget location within the Melbourne Airport so you can acquire a Budget car hire directly after landing or you can pick one up later at one of the numerous Melbourne Budget locations. When you first arrive it’s a good idea to take a drive around town to get oriented. In addition you can jump on the City Circle Tram, a heritage train with many stops within the inner city.
The Melbourne Zoo, for example, is a good one located close to the city center. After checking out the beasts, the nearby Queen Victoria Market with its multicultural vendors is a cool place to recharge, have a bite, and of course, people watch. Talk to the vendors about what’s going on in town while you’re there, they’re a diverse bunch and often love to talk to travelers about their communities and the unique experiences they have to offer.
When you’re ready for some action, why not take in a game? Football is hugely popular, played at several locations around the city, most often Friday through Sunday, and attracts big crowds. A great option is the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a world class venue which hosts both football and cricket depending on the season. A wonderful location for some great photos is the Rialto Tower which has an excellent observation deck that has wide sweeping views of Melbourne.
Dining options abound in Melbourne, but Chinatown is especially inviting, particularly if you’re on a budget. There are rows of options ranging from simple noodle shops to extravagant gourmet banquets, and most of them have their menus outside so you can check them all out first, and then pick the one that most appeals to your taste and wallet.
When you’re ready for some rest and relaxation, visit the St. Kilda Beach and Pier. Besides the sparkling clean, white sandy beach, there’s also a pathway for pedestrians and cyclists. Acland Street is near the beach and famous for its sweet shops, an excellent area in which to grab a coffee after a few lazy hours on the beach to recharge. On Sundays there’s a big outdoor market there too, offering local handicrafts, art and souvenirs.
If you still crave more nature after the beach, the Dandenong Ranges National Park is an excellent selection. This national park and its lush foliage and winding trails is less than an hour out of town and easily accessible with your Budget car rental. Another spectacular natural attraction is the Great Ocean Road, offering incredible sights and places to experience some fine dining and then go for a nice walk after your meal.
