Unmissable Drives from Alice Springs

  1. Alice Springs Desert Park – Five minutes west of town, perfect first‑day orientation.
  2. West MacDonnell Ranges – Sealed roads lead to Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm and Bob‑looking Glen Helen Gorge. Pack swimmers for an icy dip.
  3. Uluru‑Kata Tjuta National Park – 460 km of sealed highway; allow five hours, refuel at Erldunda. The stunning sunrise over the Rock is worth the early alarm.
  4. Kings Canyon – Detour via Ernest Giles Road (4WD recommended) or stay sealed via Lasseter Highway. Rim Walk rewards with epic sandstone domes.
  5. East MacDonnell Ranges – Less‑touristed gorges like Trephina and N’Dhala. Mostly sealed; short gravel spurs are 2WD accessible in dry weather.

Alice Springs Driving Tips

  • Road Surface – Stuart Highway and major tourist routes are sealed. Many side tracks are gravel; a 4WD or high‑clearance SUV is best if you plan to explore those.
  • Fuel & Supplies – Petrol stations thin out fast outside town. Top up whenever you’re below half a tank.
  • Wildlife – Kangaroos and cattle wander the bitumen at dawn, dusk and night. Daylight driving is safest.
  • Weather – Summer heat can top 40 °C. Carry at least 10 L of water per person and let tyres cool before checking pressure.
  • Remote Travel – Tell someone your route, pack a spare tyre and a paper map (mobile coverage can vanish), plenty of water and provisions!

FAQs – Alice Springs Car Hire

Do I need a 4WD to drive from Alice Springs to Uluru?
No. The Lasseter and Stuart Highways are sealed, so a standard car works. If you plan side trips on gravel roads, upgrade to an SUV or 4WD for comfort and clearance.

What car is best for outback tracks and gorges?
Choose a 4WD or AWD SUV from our 4WD fleet. Higher suspension handles corrugations and creek crossings better.

Is a normal sedan fine for the city centre?
Yes. Streets are wide, traffic is light, and parking is easy. A standard car is perfect for business trips or errands around town.

Can I pick up at Alice Springs Airport and drop off in Uluru?
Absolutely. One‑way hires are available between Alice Springs and Yulara (Uluru). Select “different drop‑off location” when booking; a relocation fee applies.

How far is Alice Springs from Uluru by car?
Approximately 460 km (about five hours of drive time). Factor in fuel and rest stops.

What documents do I need to hire a car?
Bring your current driver’s licence (in English), a credit card, and proof of identity. Drivers must usually be 21 years or older. See Requirements for Renting FAQs for more informations.
