Fastbreak Pick up: Proceed to the Budget Fastbreak line or Budget rental counter. Present your driver licence and receive your rental agreement and keys.

Fastbreak Return: Park the vehicle and lock it. If a return agent is not available in the rental car park, proceed to the rental counter/office with your vehicle keys, mileage and fuel level. You can access your receipt online within 72 hours of returning your vehicle.
General Directions
COUNTER: Located in terminal, along the back wall past the café, to the right of baggage claim.

CARS: Exit the main doors and the vehicles are on the right-hand side.

RETURNS: Take Airport Dr towards the terminal. The rental car park is located in front of the terminal.

AFTER-HOURS RETURNS: Available until 8pm. Drop box located on the in terminal counter.
After-hours Returns
Park & lock the car. Place the completed contract & the keys in the Drop Box located in the Returns area. Remember to take your personal belongings with you.

Car Hire New Plymouth Airport

New Plymouth is a small coastal city on New Zealand’s North Island. It’s a natural base for travellers planning to hike Mount Taranaki, and the city’s sunny climate, beautiful parks, and world-class art galleries make it a popular tourist destination.

If you’re flying into New Plymouth Airport, you’ll need a car to make the most of the stunning natural beauty the area of Taranaki has to offer. Budget car rental is conveniently located inside the airport, so your adventure can start as soon as you land.

Our Location

The budget car rental counter is located inside the main terminal building, on the left side of the entrance along the back wall near the café. The counter is open from 7am – 9pm Monday to Friday, 7am – 6.30pm Saturday, and 9am – 9pm Saturday. After hours keydrop is available until 8pm.

To save time at the airport and ensure your onward journey runs smoothly, download the Budget app and register for our Fastbreak service. Fastbreak gives you access to a priority line at Budget counters, and you can get the keys to your rental car after showing your ID – no waiting around and filling out paperwork. Fastbreak members can also enjoy self-service car return – just drop your keys and rental agreement in the designated box when you return your vehicle.

New Plymouth Airport Information

New Plymouth Airport is a small airport with two domestic terminals. A new terminal is currently under development and is expected to be completed in 2020.

Air New Zealand, Jet Star, and Originair are the airlines currently flying to and from New Plymouth Airport. Daily flights are available to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Nelson, and Napier.

The airport is 11km northeast of the city centre, a drive which takes approximately 13 minutes. To get to the airport from New Plymouth, head east out of town on State Highway 3. Follow the road for 8km until the left turn for Airport Drive. This road heads north for a further 2km until you reach the airport.

Things to See and Do Around New Plymouth Airport

New Plymouth is a small city but it has plenty to keep you occupied if you have some time to kill before your flight. The advantage of the city being compact and the airport being close is that all the major attractions are just a short drive away.

Pukekura Park in the city centre is one of New Plymouth’s most popular tourist attractions. It offers some lovely walks, a children’s playground, a teahouse, and light shows in the evening.

Brooklands Zoo is another popular spot with families. It’s free to enter and the animals have well-kept habitats. There are farmyard and exotic animals, reptiles, and birds in a walk-through aviary.

If you have an interest in art and culture, a visit to the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre is a must. This contemporary art gallery houses exhibitions by the artist and sculptor Len Lye, as well as works from other international artists. The modern building itself is also a work of art.

The Te Rewa Rewa Bridge over the mouth of the Waiwhakaiho River is a unique and impressive pedestrian bridge that makes for great photographs, as well as being part of a pleasant walk in natural surroundings.

Of course you can’t visit New Plymouth without a trip to the beach. Back Beach is one of the best beaches in the city and is completely unspoiled – you might even catch a seal basking on the sand.

If you’re returning a Budget rental car you’ll need to make sure it has a full tank of fuel before you drop it off.

If you’re driving from New Plymouth, the closest fuel station is Allied Petroleum on State Highway 3, 800m before the turnoff to the airport. If you’re approaching the airport from the north, there’s a BP gas station 300m before the turnoff.
