Northern Territory is a federal Australian territory in the centre and central northern regions, bordered by Western Australia, South Australia, and Queensland. Northern Territory is the least populated state in Australia with a mere 233,300 residents. One of the best ways to see the state is by taking one, or more, of the seven self guided tours that are mapped out for visitors to the area. With three Budget car hire locations, one located right inside the Alice Springs Airport Terminal, finding a vehicle to get you around on these tours is simple to do.
The first self guided driving tour is referred to as the Savannah Way. This journey has you driving your car hire through the tropics of the Northern Territory. Stop at the Sir Edward Pellew Islands and enjoy some fishing, wander through the mangrove-wetlands at the mouth of the McArthur River and stay to explore the zinc River Mines. Along this route you will also get the opportunity to have an up close look at the ancient Indigenous rock art in Caranbirini Conservation Reserve and stop to marvel at the sandstone outcrops of the Lost City. Other points of interest along this route include the thermal pools in Mataranka and the walking trails of Gregory National Park.
If you are in the Alice Springs area you can take the self guided driving tour, in your Budget Rental, known as the Red Centre. This is a 1135 km loop drive that starts at ends in Alice Springs, and takes you on a journey through red desert sands, forests, valleys and gorges. Start by visiting the galleries of Alice Springs and learn of the land and history of the area and the path you are about to travel. Once you are on the road drive your car hire to the Redbank Gorge pools, visit the Finke Gorge National Park and then head to the Kings Canyon, in Watarrka National Park where you can walk along the cliffs and take in the beautiful sites.
